Design Thinking White Paper

Author:
Dr. Marco Berti, Temple University
Published Date:

Most companies feel the need to innovate in order to keep up with potentially disruptive competitors. Design inspired approaches, such as design thinking, have been hailed as a new ‘silver bullet’ that can help organization to completely rethink their offerings, their relationship with customers, their business models. Despite a flurry of publications on ‘how to do’ design thinking there is very little research and understanding of the actual impacts and consequences of its application in existing organization.

Dr. Berti discusses about design thinking, what it means to adopt it and some implications of its adoption.

Invitation for Charity Art Auction on 30 July 2015

Date:
Thursday, 16 July 2015 - 9:00am to Friday, 31 July 2015 - 7:00pm

Temple University Alumni Association Singapore is proud to present Hands for Hope Aisa. It is a charity organization that is co-founded by our alum, Joni Ferrier, MsHRM Class of 2013/2014. This charity organisation aims to help women and children at risk in Singapore and the Philippines. It all began with a group of friends who met in a Filipino martial arts school. They have a shared vision of engaging and helping the local communities in these two countries, particularly women and children that are victims of domestic violence, as well as street children that need basic care and education.

The objective is to empower women and children that are victims of domestic violence and abuse, to allow them to create their own future.

For their inaugural fund raising project, they are holding a charity art auction on 30 July, 6:30 pm at Volvo Art Loft. The proceeds of this auction will go to Start Shelter in Singapore and to Preda Foundation in the Philippines. It will also fund two projects of the charity:

1. Art for Hope - focuses on art workshops as a form of therapy for the women and children residing at our beneficiary organisations. These workshops are run by professional artists, with the aim of allowing attendees to express their feelings through art, and to contribute to their emotional healing.

2. Kali for Hope - a simple and effective set of self-defense techniques was formulated for victims of domestic violence and abuse. These workshops allow them to build confidence and at the same time, understand the psyche of predators, in order to protect themselves and their children.  They are conducted with the assistance of renowned Filipino Martial Arts academy KPMA.

Office Bullies & Other Workplace Incivilities White Paper

Author:
Dr. Lynne Andersson, Temple University
Published Date:
22 Jun 2015

A level of civility is fundamental to doing business. People tend to choose to do business with those who grant them respect and make them feel good (Martin, 1996). Civility among employees fosters smooth relationships in the workplace, promoting harmony and goodwill. When civility is absent, work relations are strained. Rude treatment can make workers unhappy, and this can lead to cynicism, aggressive behavior, higher turnover, lower productivity, and lost customers (Blau & Andersson, 2005; Cortina, Magley, Williams & Langhout, 2001; Pearson, Andersson & Porath, 2004; Yeung & Griffin, 2008). Uncivil behavior makes the work environment unpleasant, and it can negatively impact a company’s bottom line (Cortina et al., 2001; Gonthier, 2002; Pearson, Andersson & Wegner, 2001).

Professor Andersson discusses the negativity of incivilities and the insight that is needed to manage the phenomenon in the workplace.
